Elizabeth Harris is no Betty Draper.
“Mad Men” fans who know January Jones as the icy mom get to see the actress take on a role in “Unknown” that’s light-years away from the ’60s housewife.
Jones plays Elizabeth Harris, who travels to Berlin with her biochemist husband Dr. Martin Harris (Liam Neeson).
Within hours, Martin is in a car accident, waking days later to find Elizabeth “married” to another Martin Harris (Aidan Quinn).
Calling Elizabeth “interesting and undefinable,” she explained, “You don’t know who she is … and you might never know who she is. The audience has to decide: Is she a good or bad guy.
“What I liked about this role was it was something I hadn’t done before,” Jones, 33, said at a press conference at Los Angeles’ posh Peninsula hotel.
“Unknown,” she added, is “an homage to the old Hitchcock films, with a touch of noir to it.”
Is Jones on the lookout for “nice girl” roles to avoid being typecast as icy Betty Draper?
“What’s fun about playing someone sweet? Am I typecast as being horrible?” she wondered aloud.
“Maybe. It’s kind of great isn’t it? Sweet can be boring. I will try to stay away from that for everyone’s sake.”
Jones is set for another big-screen moment this June as Emma Frost, a mutant blond bombshell with telepathic powers, in the new “X-Men: First Class” movie.
“I didn’t really read ‘X-Men’ comics when I was younger,” she said.
So she did her research.
“The comics really helped me because they go into such great detail. I really wanted to explore this character and her emotional issues. My big question was: ‘Why are they so angry? What are their motives?’ ”
